Ken Ilungas just paid off debt he incurred by being a student and was essentially poor. He didn’t have a large savings. He decided to never put himself in debt again so he decided to be homeless. It was the best decision he ever made.
He invested in a cheap van that he personalized by taking out a row of seats, putting in a mattress and adding a portable stove. He bought cheap food, got used to going to the school library to use the internet and slept in a Walmart parking lot every night. It seems irresponsible to most, however he was focused on saving money.
It was hard work, but he did it. He was able to go to school, save money and not drown in a sea of debt.
Living in a van was the best financial decision Ken made.
He could survive on less than $5,000 a year, saving the rest.
His new home.
Finding free, clean water was important.
So was learning how to cook.
